Matanichian (1792-1871) drew the 189 pictures included in a two volume, woodblock-printed picture book entitled Shinto Kayō Zufu (Newly Imported Flower and Leaf Illustrated Guide). It was published over a thirty year period (1840-1870). Matanichian’s picture subjects were plants that were newly introduced to his part of Japan during his lifetime. He drew them in a realistic way but some of the accompanying names are no longer used so their identity is a mystery.
